The tradition continued in this same fashion with kid goku jr. His power up and subsequent memory loss is super boo boo. Could be what happened to goten, he really might not remember.

The DNA/inheritance theory is just looking for a way to explain a confusing situation. Has Vegeta even achieved SSJ when Trunks is conceived? Going from the timeline Trunks would have been conceived roughly 1 year after future Trunks killed Frieza and the first time we see a SSJ Vegeta is vs the androids.

There is no logical explanation for it imo, it was just that the story line with fusion/Gotenks required Goten/Trunks to be strong or fusion would have been pointless.
Just because he couldn't hold the transformation doesn't mean the form was present in hisndna. Maybe he was so close and actually broke through, but just couldn't hold it like when Gohan or Trunks both first almost have it
Yea the ability to go SSJ is in all saiyans DNA which is why the DNA/inheritance explanation doesn't explain why they were able to achieve it at such a young age compared to other saiyans.

The best example that it has nothing to do with DNA is future Trunks and kid Trunks, both have the exact same DNA and one achieved the form at aged 14 I think it was and the other aged 8. Add on the fact that kid Trunks has nothing to fight/train for and I don't think there is an explanation for them being able to transform at an early age other than they needed to be strong for Gotenks to fight Buu.

That's a very good point. The only thing I can think of is, with Goku's death, Vegeta didn't achieve Super Saiyan as quick, because he had less of a reason to. Pretty poor I know, but i'm scrambling here. Obviously, it doesn't make too much sense and I think it was AT's way of making fun of how the transformation became nothing at that point.

Having Goten and Trunks SSJ's never really bothered me that much. I mean at this point in the series we already had SSJ2 so SSJ was pretty much useless.
